Rancho Santa Gertrudes 5th & 6th grade students participated in the National Walk to School event on Wednesday, October 5th, 2016. The goal of this event is to raise awareness and support for the health, community and environment benefits of regularly walking to school.
Benefits of Walking to School:
1. Walking to school can increase engagement in physical activity after school and during the evening.
2. Students who actively commute to school have lower body mass indices (BMI) than non-active commuters to school.
3. Exercise among children can lead to improved mental functioning on tasks that involve executive functions, such as performing goal-directed actions in complex stimulus environments.
4.Physical activity can result in better mathematics and reading achievement.
We thanked the support of Santa Fe Springs Management Assistant, Community Services Department Maritza Sosa-Nieves, Whittier Police Department Santa Fe Springs Division Officer Lindsey Inman and Jersey Elementary School Principal Dr. Trimmel.
