On May 6, 2014 Rancho Santa Gertrudes School dedicated their new kindergarten mural to retiring kindergarten teacher, Kathy Tahmizian. After spending 35 years in the Los Nietos School District, 29 of them in the same classroom as a kindergarten teacher, Ms. Tahmizian is retiring at the end of this school year.
The Rancho Art Club created the concept for the Rancho mural, as they wanted to depict, “What Rancho Means to Me”. The students worked with their staff advisors (Mrs. Quiroz, Mrs. Cuellar, Mrs. Coutant and Mrs. Cedeño) to hone the concept of what the mural should depict, and finally agreed to place Ms. Tahmizian in the center of the mural as she embodies the spirit of care, love, and dedication that all Los Nietos Teachers display. Muralist, Jeanine Hattas, created her third mural in two years at Rancho Santa Getrudes School.
The mural was made possible through grants and funds obtained through the Santa Fe Springs Heritage Arts Advisory Committee, Rancho PTC, Mrs. Janet Wong, and the Los Nietos School District.
In addition to the mural unveiling, a representative from Assemblyman Ian Calderon’s office presented Ms. Tahmzian a California Legislature certificate of recognition to commemorate her retirement. Additionally, certificates of recognition were given to classified retiree’s Linda Ochoa and Elaine Moreno.
