On Saturday February 2, 2013 Rancho competed amongst the very best spellers in all of Los Angeles County. Quayin Wong, 5th grade student, represented Rancho in the regional county level of competition of the National Scripps Spelling Bee. The event took place at Walter Reed Middle School Auditorium located in the city of North Hollywood, California.
Our congratulations go out to our student, who represented us with honor and pride. He competed against 103 students from 25 different public school districts, 6 charter schools, 12 parochial schools, 25 private schools, and 61 public schools. After this experience, he is determined to return next year, and make it to the national level.
Every student that competed had to submit a statement and this is what Quayin wrote:
"My favorite subject is social studies. My favorite activities are Battle of the Books, Art Club and Chess Club. I like doing the research and work for my after school activities like reading my BOB books and doing art projects. My grandma, Janet Wong, helps and supports me with everything I do. The teachers at Rancho Santa Gertrudes have also helped me with my spelling."
