Veteran's Day

What is Veteran's Day? Why do we get Veteran's Day off from school or work? On November 11th, we honor veterans and their service to America. Veterans are people who served in the armed forces. They don’t have to take part in the war to be a veteran. Just having served in one of the branches of the military is enough.

When did Veteran's Day begin? The original name for Veteran's Day was Armistice Day. It was called that by President Woodrow Wilson on November 11, 1919. Veteran's Day did not become a national holiday until 1938. Veteran's Day is a day to honor all of those men and women that served our country whether they are alive or dead.

Veteran's Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veteran's Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veteran's Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
